The material caters for a range of interests and abilities appropriate for children in the primary and early secondary school years and includes suggested activities; discussion questions; and learning, teaching and assessment strategies. It supports successful cognitive development by ensuring children are engaged in activities which assist them to:
• develop personal and social values which become part of their lives
• gain acceptance by, and support among, peers
• think more reflectively and abstractly
• become aware of, and interact with, the world around them.

The following process is suggested:

1. The whole class should watch the segment at least once. The dialogue can be quite complex and a second viewing is advisable. You can freeze frames on particular scenes and ensure that all children understand the dialogue.

2. The Preamble provided for each segment summarises the main issues raised. Class discussion will involve using the questions provided to raise philosophical issues concerning either the broad issue (eg. Emotions) or specific issues raised in segments (eg. Can you put a price on the emotions raised by video or film?).

3. Involvement in the activities you select.

4. Class continues discussion of philosophical issues.

The process of discussion and activity can be repeated as required.

The themes are linked to key curriculum learning area content and outcomes.

Unit 11. Emoticons

Students explore issues to do with identity and what makes us unique individuals and the events and factors that helped to shape us. They will share ideas about what they like, what is important to them and what they would like to achieve in the future.
The Excursion

Unit 12. Identity, perception and knowledge

Students explore the connections between brain, mind and personality. They discuss faces and facades and explore ‘reality’

Theme/Topic: Growth and development, Self and relationships, Ethics, Values, Justice.
Unit 13. Mind, brain and memory

Students explore the differences between our perceptions of our bodies and brains. They discuss ‘memory’, the implications of losing one’s memory and not being able to communicate.

Unit 14. Choice and Ownership

Students explore the concept of civics and citizenship. What makes a good citizen? How we can work effectively together on group projects and actively contribute to our community.
