Johnson and Friends is an entertaining and educational six part television series for kindergarten to year 1. Internationally acclaimed and broadcast on ABC TV, the series was developed under the guidance of the Centre for Early Childhood in the Faculty of Education at Sydney University. It is written with sensitivity towards current early pre school development philosophies. Through the toys interactions many themes are explored including; friendship,
loneliness, courage, disagreements, helping friends, accidents, being
scared and sharing. Resources After watching the episodes, teachers and parents can use these resources to encourage Literacy, Drama, Social Skills and Art and Craft skills. There are key questions to establish connections between the themes explored in each episode and the life experiences of the children watching. To accommodate the learning styles of 4-6 year olds an emphasis has been placed on hands-on activities and child centred discussions. |

1. Beginnings This Lesson provides activities that enhance children’s imagination and learning after viewing Episode One, Beginnings, where we are introduced to Johnson the pink elephant, McDuff the concertina and Diesel the truck. 2. Best of Friends This Lesson provides activities that enhance children’s imagination and learning after viewing Episode Three, Best of Friends in which the toys learn about how to get along together. Children discuss their feelings about sharing and settling disagreements. |

3. Helpless This Lesson provides activities that enhance children’s imagination and learning after viewing Episode Five, Helpless in which the Diesel learns to play safely. Children discuss dangerous situations, accidents and how to avoid them. Children use craft to make a car and find out about the brave things each of them has done. |

4. Moving House This Lesson provides activities that enhance children’s imagination and learning after viewing Episode Six, Moving House, Johnson & Friends in which the toys learn to cope with change and moving house. 5. The Thing Outside This Lesson provides activities that enhance children’s imagination and learning after viewing Episode Four, The Thing Outside in which the toys learn about taking chances and being brave. Children discuss how they feel in scary situations. They identify what they have done that is brave and make a medal for themselves. |

6. Under The Bed This lesson provides activities that enhance children’s learning after viewing episode Two, Under the Bed where the toys explore unknown places. Children learn about other countries and space. They plan and mime an adventure into the unknown and use their imaginations to explore new environments. |
