Maggie
Colbert is nine and she is an all-out performer. Tempestuous, Maggie takes
everything to heart. She has a photographic memory which can be extremely
useful but most of the time gets her into trouble. Maggie wants to be
taken seriously by those of her sister's age, but of course, she isn't
and this is a continual source of irritation for her.

Mike Masters is fourteen and he thinks
science sucks. Mike's mother was killed in a plane accident and he lives
with his father Tony who is a famous astro-physicist. Mike hates science
because he feels his father's obsession with deep space has come between
them.

Nikki
|
Nikki Colbert is thirteen.
She loves science and her dream is to be the first person on Mars. She
is very bright and the language of science is second nature to her. Nikki
wants to go to astronaut school and to receive the first message from
intelligent extra-terrestrials. Much to her chagrin, she has to share
much of her personal space with her little sister, Maggie.

Marie Colbert is Nikki's and Maggie's mother. She
is a senior CSIRO scientist at Kaputar, working on specialised environmental
projects. She is divorced and the girls' father lives in France.

Tony Masters is working
on an automated inter-planetary probe to fly past Pluto and has the opportunity
to join a NSAS space expedition. Tony and Mike have settled in Kapatur
to live after travelling all over the world with Tony's work.
