New Release: The Deep learning resource

Dive into ocean science, sustainability, habitats, design technologies and more with your Year 3-6 students, with curated clips, discussion starters and collaborative learning sequences to use with your class.

Created by the ACTF in collaboration with the Australian National Maritime Museum, this free STEAM learning resource supports students and teachers in Years 3 to 6 to explore the animated television series The Deep in the classroom: https://actf.com.au/the-deep-learning-resource

When completing student testing for this learning resource, educators began by sharing the above image with students and asked if they recognised the show. In response, the auditorium was filled with the warm and excited shouts of, “The Deep!”

This recognisable and award-winning television series follows the adventures of the Nekton family - a brilliant team of underwater explorers. With state-of-the-art technology and an unquenchable thirst for discovery, the Nektons explore the mysterious depths of the ocean, where most of our world lies unexplored and unexplained.

The Deep learning resource covers the four seasons of the television series through two learning sequences. The sequences include clips from the series, videos from museum experts, downloadable worksheets, discussion starters, collaborative tasks, creative activities and much more. Teachers can follow the sequence of tasks or choose one or more tasks for shorter lessons. Each sequence has been mapped to the Australian Curriculum across Science, Design and Technologies, Sustainability, Media Arts, English and Critical and Creative Thinking.

The first sequence explores ocean science, habitats and stories through the lens of the amazing and interesting creatures created in the series. You can view students sharing their “Design a Creature” task from this learning sequence below.

The second sequence follows a design thinking framework by exploring the innovative technologies designed in the series and asks students to design new and innovative technologies to support the navigation and sustainability of our oceans.

The learning resource also includes a downloadable episode package with the key episodes mentioned in the series.

Avrill Stark, Producer of The Deep said: “We are thrilled that the ACTF has teamed up with the Australian National Maritime Museum to create a wonderful educational resource. The Deep, whilst being entertaining, draws its inspiration and stories from real sea creatures and ocean environments. The Deep is an engaging, educational series in the way that it merges the fantastical with actual ocean science and we feel that as an education resource, it will encourage students to explore ocean science, sustainability, habitats, design technologies and more in the classroom.”

We hope this resource supports the teaching of ocean science, sustainability and design and technologies in new, engaging and creative ways.

If you are planning to use this resource in your classroom please get in touch to share your feedback: education@actf.com.au
